A traineeship is a job combined with structured training. By becoming an apprentice or a trainee, you have decided to gain expertise in your career at the same time you achieve a nationally recognised qualification. Australian traineeship combine practical work with structured training to provide a nationally recognised qualification that leads to skilled employment. Studying through "Start Education" with self-paced learning materials allows minimum disruption to the workplace. "Start Education" is able to accept enrolment applications into traineeship courses all year round for selected courses (condition applies). Traineeship program could vary depending on employment status. There are 2 types of trainees:
- New Entrants: A New Entrant is an employee that has been with the same employer for less than 3 months full-time or 12 months part-time.
- Existing Workers: An Existing Worker is an employee that has been with the same employer for more than 3 months fulltime or 12 months part-time.

Minimum requirements:
To be eligible to undertake an Apprenticeship or Traineeship you must have the following criteria:
- be at least 15 years of age
- be working in a permanent part time or full time capacity; and
- be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia
